A legend of our times, Aldo Conterno, nicknamed the King of Barolo, produces one of the most elegant and refined Barolo wines.
In 1961 Aldo, with his brother Giovanni, inherited the family vineyards, however the two split up in 1969 over a differing interpretation of Barolo: Giovanni sought a more powerful wine that would require years of aging to become approachable, whilst Aldo sought the utmost elegance that the wine could express, even in its youth. Aldo Conterno's style of winemaking allows for the extraction of only the softest tannins, preserving the ability of the wine to evolve for many years. He is amongst the so-called traditional Barolo producers, using only large Slavonian oak barrels that do not impart any extra flavors to the wine.
With the sole exception of Dolcetto, all the other wines produced by this estate, which Aldo refers to as my sons’ wines, are barrique-aged and a great expression of a more modern style.
“Piedmont's most gifted winegrower, bar none. No one makes purer, truer, finer Barolos. Even his famously traditionalist older brother, Giovanni (who inherited the Barolo Monfortino Riserva label), changed his style, emulating you-know-who.” -- Matt Kramer, Wine Spectator
“His Barolo could perhaps best be described as classic style without the defects, packing as he does into his finest bottles just about every nuance of which great Barolo is capable. And one feature above all others, perhaps: balance.” -- Nicolas Belfrage, Master of Wine
